About Me
Welcome to Binaural Diaries Field Recording, the home of immersive field recordings—or “sound photographs”—from Bristol and beyond. Here, I capture life’s ambient moments in audio to transport listeners into environments with remarkable realism.
🎧Who I am
I'm a UK‑based field recording enthusiast and audio documentarian. Since launching this project in 2006, I’ve travelled across the UK and Europe, capturing unique natural and urban soundscapes. Inspired by The Wire magazine’s Wire Tapper compilations and Aaron Ximm’s Quiet American site, Binaural Diaries began as a passion project—and continues to grow with every recording.
🎧What I Do
On Binaural Diaries Field Recordings, you'll find long-form audiologs featuring:
Ambient nature recordings: birdsong at dawn, thunderstorms in France, riverside tranquillity
Urban and transport soundscapes: train rides, Bristol market ambience, ferries and cycle path sounds
Unique environmental audio events: church bells, carillon performances, even fireworks and local celebrations
🎧My Gear & Technique
I record primarily with a Sony PCM‑M10 recorder at 48 kHz/24‑bit, paired with Sound Professionals SP‑TFB‑2 binaural microphones, occasionally supplemented by the recorder’s built‑in stereo mic when speed is essential. Earlier work includes recordings using other microphone and recorder combinations, the earliest using minidisc and unbranded mics
🎧Why Binaural Audio?
Binaural recording creates a three‑dimensional listening experience using dual microphones positioned to mimic human ears. When heard through headphones, these recordings restore spatial realism—sounds appear to originate from above, behind, or all around you. This technique shines in ambient and environmental audio that reward calm, focused listening.
🎧What You’ll Experience
Real-time, unedited long-form soundscapes—free of artificial enhancements.
An evolving audio journal of the world, from Bristol’s Leigh Woods and Temple Meads, to landscapes across France, Belgium, and more.
A growing archive of sound diaries inviting both mindful listening and everyday use as calming background ambience.

Thank you for tuning in to Binaural Diaries Field Recording—where everyday moments become immersive audio experiences. I hope these recordings bring you delight, calm, and a renewed connection to the ambient world.
